Billboard Design: The Kids Cancer Project
Designing for billboards is about more than just scale—it’s about clarity, emotion, and impact in a matter of seconds. For TKCP, the challenge was to create a series of billboard designs that could cut through visual noise, communicate a meaningful message within 4 seconds, and drive action across multiple formats and locations.
With three distinct creative directions developed across four different billboard sizes, the project required both strategic thinking and precise execution.
Project Overview
The Kids Cancer Project is a leading Australian charity dedicated to funding scientific research to find better treatments and cures for childhood cancer. The campaign aimed to raise awareness and encourage donations through high-visibility outdoor placements.
The core challenge was to deliver a consistent message across multiple formats while ensuring each design remained impactful, legible, and emotionally resonant—regardless of size or viewing distance.
Key Objectives
Create high-impact billboard designs that capture attention instantly
Communicate a clear and emotional message in seconds
Maintain consistency across multiple sizes and placements
Develop three distinct creative concepts within a unified campaign
Drive awareness and encourage public support and donations
Design Approach
1. Concept Development: Three Distinct Directions.
Three unique design concepts were created to explore different emotional and visual approaches:
Human-Centred Storytelling — Focused on real children and their stories, creating an immediate emotional connection
Bold Statistic-Driven Messaging — Used striking data points to communicate urgency and scale
Hope & Future-Focused Visuals — Highlighted optimism, progress, and the impact of research
Each concept was designed to stand alone while still feeling part of a cohesive campaign.
2. Designing for Distance and Speed.
Billboards are often viewed in motion—whether driving past or walking through busy areas. Designs were stripped back to their essentials:
Minimal text
Large, legible typography
Strong focal points
High contrast for visibility
Every element needed to be understood within seconds.
3. Multi-Format Adaptation (4 Sizes).
The campaign was rolled out across four different billboard sizes, requiring careful adaptation of each design. Rather than simply resizing layouts, each format was rebalanced to maintain visual hierarchy and impact.
This ensured consistency without compromising effectiveness across:
Large-format roadside billboards
Transit placements
Digital screens
Compact urban panels
4. Emotional Clarity. The messaging was carefully crafted to balance sensitivity with impact. The goal was to evoke empathy without overwhelming the viewer—encouraging action through connection rather than shock.
5. Clear Call to Action.
Each design included a simple, direct call to action—making it easy for viewers to understand how they can support the cause.
Results
The final billboard series delivered a cohesive and impactful campaign that performed effectively across all formats. By combining strong visual design with clear messaging, the campaign successfully captured attention and reinforced the mission of The Kids’ Cancer Project.
Key outcomes include:
Strong visibility across diverse billboard placements
Clear and immediate communication of campaign messaging
Emotional engagement that resonates with a broad audience
Consistent brand presence across multiple formats
A flexible design system for future campaign extensions
Final Thoughts
Outdoor advertising demands simplicity, precision, and intent. There’s no room for distraction—only what matters most.
For The Kids’ Cancer Project, this campaign demonstrates how thoughtful design can turn a fleeting moment into a meaningful connection—transforming awareness into action.
When the message matters, every second counts. Great billboard design doesn’t just get seen—it gets remembered.
